TSPU's Institute of Foreign Languages Launches Series of Career Orientation Events for school students
In an exciting initiative aimed at guiding the next generation towards promising careers in linguistics, the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Cooperation at the TSPU (Tomsk State Pedagogical University) recently kicked off a series of career orientation events. Focused on the field of «Linguistics» with a specialization in «Translation and Translation Studies». This event brought together university students from the 2nd and 3rd years with 9th graders from Perspektiva School. The young scholars had the unique opportunity to dive into the world of translation and interpretation.
The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from students and faculty members of the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Cooperation. This institute, known for its commitment to fostering language skills, has a tradition of organizing interactive events for school students eager to enhance their foreign language proficiency. Last year, they regularly held sessions at the "TalkFest" club. This year, their efforts have taken on a more career-oriented aspect, as they aim to acquaint prospective students with the Institute's offerings and help them make informed career choices.
«The ongoing series features a range of thematic sessions, scheduled every two to three weeks — says Valeria Mikhaylovna Lemskaya, Deputy Director of the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Cooperation, — These events are beneficial not only for school students, who expand their language knowledge and get closer to understanding their professional aspirations, but also for university students who get to act as mentors».
The first session focused on the challenging world of oral translation, one of the most demanding aspects of a translator's work. University students and school participants teamed up to use specialized equipment for simultaneous interpretation. They practiced echo-repetition, read excerpts from literary works and news articles, expanded their English vocabulary, and clarified word meanings in Russian. The highlight of the session was the opportunity for guests to hear a live Russian-Chinese translation from a native Chinese speaker.
