The Universiade is the international sports competitions among students, holding under the aegis of the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name "Universiade" comes from the words "University" and "Olympics". Student competitions are held every two years, unlike the four-year Olympic events. Students from the age of 17 to 25 years and graduates who have received an academic degree or a diploma in the year preceding the competition are allowed to participate in competitions. The program of the Universiade includes compulsory (the list is approved by FISU prior to the start of the bidding campaign) and optional (additional) sports that the host country determines, provided that they meet all the requirements of the International University Sports Federation. The International University Sports Federation currently approved the following capitals of the Winter Games - Almaty (Kazakhstan) - 2017, Krasnoyarsk (Russia) - 2019. The history of the 29th Winter Universiade-2019 in Krasnoyarsk began in 2012. On January 9, the President of Russia signed an instruction to the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation on the realization of particular measures to prepare Krasnoyarsk for participation in the bidding campaign. On November 9, 2013 in Brussels, the FISU Executive Committee decided to hold the Winter Universiade 2019 in Krasnoyarsk. The 29th Winter Universiade 2019 will take place in Krasnoyarsk from 2 to 12 March, 2019. Athletes will compete 76 sets of awards in 11 sports: alpine skiing, bandy, biathlon, cross-country skiing, curling, figure skating, freestyle skiing, ice hockey, short track, ski orienteering, snowboarding.

The Winter Universiade 2019 is the third Universiade hosted by Russia. The first one was in Moscow in 1973, the second was in Kazan in 2013. In modern Russian history, the Kazan Universiade set the high standard for large international sports events, which was widely implemented at the Olympic Games in Sochi. The Winter Universiade 2019 makes Krasnoyarsk a unique sports arena where world powers will take part in a frank sports holiday, the core value of which is to overcome national and religious barriers, to unite people and states. In 2019, Russia is planning to hold the warmest games ever.
